The 2003 bush fires raged for months, during which time the Jindabyne Community Aerodrome was commandeered by the Fire Fighting Service as the Aerial Attack Base for the fire fighting operation for the Southern area of the fire. The Aerodrome was extensively used by the service for that fire and following fire events over the next years.
There is now a permanent fire fighting stores shed, and retardant base situated on the Aerodrome standing ready for the next emergency.
One of the great values of the Jindabyne Community Aerodrome is as a facility for the rapid deployment of emergency personnel and equipment in times of emergency. For example during the Thredbo Landslide tragedy, the Aerodrome was used extensively by the Air Ambulance, Police, Media, and Officials.
We expect that when the next big event happens the Jindabyne Community Aerodrome will again be pressed into service by various people that would never give a thought about how such an improtant facility came to be made available.
